St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom)

The majestic St. Stephen’s Cathedral is both a defining icon of Vienna’s skyline and one of the crowning masterpieces of Gothic architecture. Its vividly patterned, colorful tiled roof and soaring tower make it impossible to miss in the Innere Stadt old town.

Exterior Take time to admire the cathedral’s intricate exterior, covered in decorative stone carvings and statues. The iconic tiled roof features 230,000 glazed tiles in a zigzag pattern of red, brown, and yellow. Both the North and South towers preside over the cathedral, with the South Tower (Steffl) offering a viewing platform reached by 343 steps. Don’t miss the whimsical stone figures flanking the main entrance, including the famous tongue-sticking “Raunzers.”

Interior Inside the vast medieval interior, highlights include the incredible stone pulpit created by masters Pilgram and woodcarver Anton Singriener, the Gothic carved chancel and high altar, and the monumental main organ from 1537. Head up the narrow stairs to the Watchman’s Panorama Terrace for sweeping city views.

Catacombs & Treasures Beneath the cathedral are haunting catacombs containing the remains of over 10,000 people. Also part of the cathedral’s holdings are priceless treasures like jewel-encrusted reliquaries and religious artifacts displayed in the Cathedral Treasury.
